Toronto, ON, September 9, 2026 — AquaAction was on site today for the launch of federal consultations on the new National Water Security Strategy.
In response, AquaAction President Soula Chronopoulos offered the following reaction:
"We applaud the federal government for moving quickly to launch consultations on the National Water Security Strategy.
Canadians are facing just about every water-related issue under the sun: droughts, floods, aging infrastructure and emerging pollutants. We’ve seen it in every corner of the country, from a major water main break in Calgary to a dried-up Mackenzie River and ‘once-in-a-century’ floods in Toronto happening all too regularly. Our myth of being impervious to water insecurity is rapidly evaporating.
But Canada has a chance to lead on solutions. There is a booming worldwide economy for water innovation and technology, and we have all the ingredients to be a leader. Canada is not short of ideas; we are short of the proper supports to move innovations from the lab into the field.
The federal government has already promised a $100-million Strategic Water Security Technology Fund, alongside a municipal stream under the Freshwater Action Plan to help communities test and adopt those solutions. The National Water Security Strategy is an opportunity to follow through on those commitments and bring them together as part of a coordinated national approach.
Technology is only part of the equation. Canadians care deeply about water and are concerned about how it is managed, yet feel overwhelmingly uninformed about it.
The National Water Security Strategy is our chance to change that: to start a national conversation, turn it into action, and galvanize Canadians behind a more water-secure future.”
